Locked Up Abroad: British Backpacker

Wow, this was so shocking and it made me so angry! I love to travel and I have been lucky enough to visit some really nice places, Hawaii, Japan, Mexico, Italy, France, Germany and Switzerland. I think the one thing for me that helped me greatly when I was on my travels was that I used common sense at all times. The guys in this story unfortunately either didn't have common sense or they failed to use it and the 3 of them ended up being taken hostage by some Islamic Jihad soldiers in India. India is one of those countries that I will NEVER visit. I've seen it on the Amazing Race several times. The poverty alone is just heartbreaking. There are gangs of homeless children, dirty, hungry and without parents who beg in the streets and scavenge for meals out of the trash left on the streets. So sad!!! In this true story, the year is 1994 and a british man named Bella was backpacking in India and met this young good looking, well educated Indian man named Rohit. Rohit was obviously attracted to Neal, and one day while admiring Bella's bracelet he held Bella's hand too long. Bella was uncomfortable and pulls his hand away abruptly. Now as Bella is retelling the story, he claims he is afraid to go anywhere with Rohit because he is afraid of being raped. So will someone please tell me, WHY, on that same day he left with Rohit to go visit some relative of Rohits? Must not have been too afraid, because his dumb ass still got into the car with Rohit and left with him and 2 other gentlemen. Luckily for Bella, rape was not on the menu for that day. However, taking him hostage to force the British Government to release some Islamic men they were holding go free. Never gonna happen, the British Government does not negotiate with terrorists. So some time goes by , like weeks and then Rohit brings two British Soldiers he has captured, so now he has 3 hostages. One of those men was captured because his dumb ass also met Rohit in a street cafe they got to talking. And this soldier tells Rohit that he's been there for sometime and his visa is about to expire and he will returning to Britain. However, he's not been invited to any one's house for a meal so he feels like he hasn't really experience real Indian culture yet. Rohit tells him, oh wow, my uncle is giving a big party tomorrow, would you like to come? The soldier agrees. And so the next day, Rohit picks him up and they head off. A few minutes into their trip, Rohit pulls over and picks up 2 more men, telling the soldier that they are friends and need a lift home and its on the way. So he thinks nothing of it. That's a set up if I've ever seen one! So they are going along for a few more minutes when one the new guys takes the box of candy the soldier is holding and opens it. He doesn't protest and before he can, the other guy pulls a gun on him. And tells him to cooperate or else he has no problem shooting him. Wow, how stupid can you be. Why would allow someone you just met the day before to some unknown location and then let him pick up more strangers along the way. That is just so dangerous! And so STUPID! And look how it turned out! So eventually they get to the house where Bella is being held hostage. So again some time goes by, like weeks and weeks again. Well to make a long story short, eventually they are rescued, but it was a flook. The local police were chasing a thief in the neighborhood and during the chase the thief ran very close to the house with the hostages and the police see several men at the house and it looked like they were guarding the house. So the police go in and investigate what is going on. At first the police unlock Bella's chains only to lock them back again. So he thinks he is not going to be released, but then they unlock him again and allow him to leave the house. So Rohit is later shot and captured in a big field. Turns out Rohit is not his real name, his real name is Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh. He is arrested and charged for the kidnapping in India. Does some time and eventually gets out. Saeed is the guy who later plans the capture and beheading of reported Daniel Pearl in Pakistan. Ahmed was released in India after the 1999 Indian Airlines flight 814 was hijacked and he was the ransom for the release of the passengers. Thank God he is back in prison on death row this time in Pakistan. He is appealing his conviction, but I hope he fails at it. I hope they behead him too! Like poor Daniel Pearl. Rest in peace Daniel.

So the moral of this story is, don't go off with strange men you meet in the street. If you are foolish enough to do it, make sure you tell someone before you do it. Like write a letter to the Hotel manager and leave it at the desk with as much information as possible. The name, description, where you met, where you are supposed to be going, cell phone number of the guy you met and yours too, and try to take a pic of the guy and email to a friend or relative back home, Be slick about it. Tell him, you want to post it to facebook later or you promised your mom, you document your trip as much as possible. Then if he refuses, do NOT go with him. A real friend will take pics with you and let you post it. Some one with ulterior motives will not.
